Udaankhatola / Flying Machine by Hansa

Design Story: ‘Udaankhatola’ is a word of confidence and fun, meaning flying machine. This was her first Manchaha and by the intricacy of the design there’s no doubt Hansa put the throttle down on the runway. She balanced the use of earthen colours well and instead of playing between abstract and geometric, merged them together. This hazy and pattern filled rug can set in well to any home, and the colour transition fits with any theme too. Hansa reeled in the support of her neighbor, Sugna for a little confidence boost, but as the rug went on it was clear she was aiming for the skies. “This design is for dreamers that believe in themselves and give their best the moment they make the decision to try” she shares.

About Hansa: Hansa is a 25 year old weaver from Manpura, Rajasthan and has been weaving for the past eight years. She learned to weave from her elder brother and sister as she was close to completing high school and could start helping out more at home. She is extremely fun-loving and can knows how to lift the mood, even while focusing on the loom. She has a young son attending school and has a feeling he’ll catch on from her and make the community happy with what he grows to be.

Where does the product come from?

Udaipuriya, Rajasthan, India.

What is it made of?

Wool and bamboo rayon.

Where does it go at the end of its life?

In India, handknotted rugs are kept for generations and generally passed down through families. Sometimes rugs are overdyed to provide a new look and feel to an older rug. Rugs are preserved and patches of them can be used for different areas. These rugs disintegrate and decompose and pose no harm to the environment. These rugs start and end from our environment.

Manchaha / Jaipur Living

In rural India, humanity exudes simplicity. Ideas are innocent. Imagination is boundless. Stories are everywhere. An art is born.

Manchaha, a design experiment with non-designers, ignited the power in the dying art of rug weaving. In every design there is a unique story to tell, full of emotions, dreams and the personality of its maker. Manchaha redefines art by tapping into the untamed fashion of rural India.
