FREEDOM MANCHAHA / ORIGINAL RUGS DESIGNED IN RURAL INDIA
An initiative for livelihood, creativity and healing in Rajasthan prisons.
Freedom Manchaha, is a unique initiative where inmates serving long sentences at the Jaipur and Bikaner Central Jail are taught the art of carpet weaving and production. While learning to weave, the inmates are encouraged to showcase their un-expressed creativity. Exploring color combinations in woolen yarns, they learn to make a knot and build their own color rhythms into the carpets, eventually learning to form simple patterns one knot at a time. Creatively expressing themselves while learning a new skill through extensive training, inmates rejoice to find a new meaning of life and freedom in their trapped physical spaces.

Where does the product come from?
What is it made of?
Wool and bamboo rayon.
Where does it go at the end of its life?
In India, handknotted rugs are kept for generations and generally passed down through families. Sometimes rugs are overdyed to provide a new look and feel to an older rug. Rugs are preserved and patches of them can be used for different areas. These rugs disintegrate and decompose and pose no harm to the environment. These rugs start and end from our environment.
Manchaha / Jaipur Living
In rural India, humanity exudes simplicity. Ideas are innocent. Imagination is boundless. Stories are everywhere. An art is born.
Manchaha, a design experiment with non-designers, ignited the power in the dying art of rug weaving. In every design there is a unique story to tell, full of emotions, dreams and the personality of its maker. Manchaha redefines art by tapping into the untamed fashion of rural India.
