CHESS BOARD - by Dhafali

About the rug: “There’s a chess game which keep my children busy and intrigued, I don’t understand the games of this generation but I tried making something of this sort in my rug”, explains Dhafali with an innocent smile on her face. She collected colourful threads from recycled yarn and weaved a colourful chess board in contrast to the traditional black and white game of chess. “After finishing the rug, I showed it to my children and narrated how I got inspired from their game to weave this rug, they laughed and praised me for my art”, she explains with joys.

About the weaver: Residing in a family of six people with one goat, Dhafali’s life revolves around weaving and being a homemaker. A true preserver of weaving art, the entire family knows how to weave. Though, uneducated herself Dhafali has ensured good education for all her three children and proudly shared that the best moment of her life was when her eldest son became a teacher in a Government school.

Where does the product come from?

Raigar, Koli and Khati communities in Rajasthan, India.

What is it made of?

Wool and bamboo rayon.

Where does it go at the end of its life?

In India, handknotted rugs are kept for generations and generally passed down through families. Sometimes rugs are overdyed to provide a new look and feel to an older rug. Rugs are preserved and patches of them can be used for different areas. These rugs disintegrate and decompose and pose no harm to the environment. These rugs start and end from our environment.

company statement

Manchaha / Jaipur Living

In rural India, humanity exudes simplicity. Ideas are innocent. Imagination is boundless. Stories are everywhere. An art is born.

Manchaha, a design experiment with non-designers, ignited the power in the dying art of rug weaving. In every design there is a unique story to tell, full of emotions, dreams and the personality of its maker. Manchaha redefines art by tapping into the untamed fashion of rural India.
